Breaking the Sugar Addiction Habit

Added: 12/14/2005

Sugar is a tasty, sweet substance that is contained almost in all natural products, including fruit and vegetables. Cases involving sugar abuse appeared after people have learned how to extract the sugar from plants. The problem of sugar addiction is an issue that effects more than just children. It is widespread and knows no boundaries for sex, religion or career. Research in this field shows that sugar addiction leads to such diseases as hypoglycemia, diabetes disease, heart disease and is one of the possible reasons for hyperactivity and inattention.

It took about 100 years, but society is finally paying attention to what kids of food it sticks in its body. This fact may be connected with a lot of problems that our generation suffers due to its haphazard approach to nutrition and healthy food. Overeating, different addictions and many more other problems develop from an erratic way of living and eating. One of the more serious problems that can result is sugar addiction.

Sugar addiction is a situation when a person craves sweets and sugar products and cannot stop eating them. If from the beginning, it is connected with psychological dependence, later it may lead to serious physical addiction. The withdrawal symptoms may include headaches, shivers, tiredness, anxiety and depression. These withdrawals resemble those of caffeine addiction and even alcoholic and drug addiction, even though they are not so strong and take a less serious course.
Sugar addiction in childhood may be a good basis for developing alcoholic addiction in later life. They are closely related because sugar and alcohol are processed in the body in the same way. When an individual uses too much sugar for food, the level of sugar increases in his blood. The special mechanism in the organism controls it. For example, if the level increases very fast the body experiences stress. The pancreas begins to produce insulin - hormone that destroys sugar in the blood. Usually insulin is produced in required quantities.

However, after several years of sugar abuse, the system that processes blood sugar control fails. The pancreas produces too much insulin and therefore the level of glucose in the blood drops. It is not normal and the level of energy decreases. The person feels tiredness, headaches, nervous tension, and depression. The only way out is to eat something sweet again and again. This is the mechanism of the sugar addiction. The alcohol addiction works at the same scheme and very often those people who overdo with sugar later turn into alcoholics.

Sugar addiction may lead to many other diseases, such as asthma, diabetes disease, heart disease and many more problems. Moreover, the scientists found connections between sugar and hyperactivity of children - strong emotional reactions when a child is too inattentive, impulsive, moving in abnormal way, his behavior is out of control. Sugar, dyestuff, preservatives consumed in big amounts contributes to appearing childish hyperactivity.

There are a lot of programs established to help the treatment of sugar addiction, and are arranged similarly to the programs against alcoholic abuse. But the first step in solving this problem is to keep the addicts from psychological dependence. And of course, the strict diet that will help to recover the normal metabolism - proteins, brown cereals and bread beat - will be fruitful for the addiction.

Our health is only in our own hands and it depends on how carefully we handle it. We should be attentive to the information that we receive everyday, and choose the best road to a healthy way of life.
